Taking a year out between school or college and higher
education or a job can offer you exciting, challenging and valuable opportunities,
whether it is in the UK or OVERSEAS. It will no doubt broaden yourself
and your views of the world, help build your confidence and will probably
enrich your life forever leaving you with memories for life.
All the above can be achieved as long as you plan your
year out wisely, realistically and while doing this also consider what
You want to achieve during this time.
Spend your time wisely
There are literally hundreds of opportunities for you to choose from whether
it is traveling abroad, volunteering or working within a different environment.
Whichever you chose University admission tutors and employers alike do
look for this time to have been spent wisely. It can look worse on your
CV with employers and universities if taking a year you are unable to
show that at least some of your year out was spent in a productive and
organised fashion.
Gap Year benefits
By taking a gap year you will have your first chance very often of independence.
Traveling or working away from home will give you more confidence, maturity
and a greater sense of responsibility.
A break from school and exam pressures can give you a fresh look at life
and help prepare you for your new challenges at university or work in
a year’s time.
Your enhanced C.V will give you an edge in the marketplace when you eventually
look for a job. It can make a big statement about you as a person, both
to academics and employers. If properly planned, a gap year can say as
much, if not more, about you as an individual, as any set of exam results
ever can!
How long can programmes/project last
There are numerous projects/programmes/expeditions that you can participate
in. The length of time can vary from a 2 week language course abroad to
a full 12-month commitment perhaps teaching in Africa. Many people plan
their gap to include a period of work and then travel. There are many
companies who can help you organise a gap year and a comprehensive listing
is provided here.
Just remember taking a year out as a gap year can and
should be a life changing opportunity. You will meet new friends, meet
new challenges which will enrich your life forever.
